2016 Orange CHAN Finals: Uganda lose to Zambia, there is still hope

ORANGE CHAN 2016  Finals:

Group D:

Match No. 15:  Zimbabwe 0-1 Mali

Match No. 16: Uganda 0-1 Zambia

Uganda Cranes have lost 1-0 to Zambia in the Orange CHAN finals group D match at Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu on Saturday night.

Zambian captain, Christopher Katongo headed home the only goal in the 40th minute of the game that won the game for the Chipolopolo Stars.

Uganda created several opportunities although none could be converted.

Erisa Ssekisambu and the two second half changes (Frank Kalanda and Geofry Sserunkuma) all had attempts at Zambia’s goal.

Defender, Bernard Muwanga was the only player booked in the game.

Team captain, Faruku Miya and first choice goal keeper, Isma Watenga missed the game through different injuries but watched from the VIP area reserved for players.

Chance left for Uganda:

With the two last group games coming next Wednesday,Uganda Cranes has chance of progressing.

A victory over Zimbabwe at Rubavu and a loss for Mali against Zambia at Nyamirambo will see Uganda to the last eight stage.

At the post match press conference Uganda Cranes coach Miultin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said that ‘ We shall not lose hope until the last minute of our final group stage against Zimbabwe. We shall remain competitive’

Micho also heaped praise on his players for a good show against the Zambians.

‘International football is very tricky. You lose concentration and get punished and that what happened when we conceded a goal’

Team Captain Joseph Ochaya said ‘ I feel bad losing a game which we could have won. We created many chances and deserved something better from this game. Let us plan for the final group game against Zimbabwe on Wednesday’

Uganda will return to action on Wednesday.

Meanwhile FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo met all the Cranes contingent at their hotel-Belvedere and discussed about the two games played so far.

‘Let us not lose focus irrespective of the results from the two games. Football is very dynamic. You do not expect good results all the time. Le us find remedies for the remaining part of the tournament’

H promised the players and officials that all their bonuses for qualification to the CHAN Finals would be cleared the moment FUFA gets stable financially.

‘I am aware that your bonuses for qualification have not been settled yet but when we get funds, we shall be glad to fulfill our promise’ said Magogo who visited camp with former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya.
