2025 AFCON U17: Uganda Cubs eye perfect start against hosts Morocco in opener

The Uganda U17 men’s national team, the Cubs, kick off their 2025 AFCON U17 journey with a high-stakes clash against tournament hosts Morocco on Sunday, March 30, at El Bachir Stadium, Mohammedia.

This opening fixture sets the tone for their campaign as they chase their dream of securing a spot at the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Ahead of the tournament, the Cubs have tested their mettle in competitive friendly matches both at home and in Morocco, facing Burkina Faso and Cameroon.

Despite narrow defeats (3-2 and 4-3), head coach Brian Ssenyondo remains confident that the lessons learned will be crucial in their quest for World Cup qualification.

Leading the Cubs’ attacking charge is in-form forward James Bogere, who has netted three goals in pre-tournament friendlies. He will be supported by key players such as captain Richard Okello, Isima Magala and Derrick Ssozi, who are expected to play pivotal roles in the squad.

Uganda booked their place in the tournament after clinching the CECAFA U17 title, defeating Tanzania 2-1 in the final at Nakivubo Stadium. This marks their third appearance at the continental showpiece.
