CAF African Schools Championship: Royal Giant clinch gold, Amus College settle for bronze

Royal Giant High School emerged Champions of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers for the inaugural edition of CAF African Schools Championship after edging past Geda Roble SS from Ethiopia in the final.

In the game played on Sunday at the Chamazi Stadium, Dae es Salaam in Tanzania, the Mityana based school defied odds to claim the title.

Normal time ended goalless but Royal Giant were perfect in the penalty shootout winning 4-2.

Goalkeeper Patrick Katumba saved one of the kicks from the Ethiopians while the other hit the base of the goal post.

On the other hand Enock Bagenda, Thomas Ogema, Jovan Katuramu, Najib Nalingi all scored to guide Royal Giant to victory.

It should be noted that the two teams had faced off in the group stages on Saturday with Geda Roble SS winning to top Group B on 7 points.

In the semifinals, Royal Giant overcame Libya SS from South Sudan winning 2-1 thanks to Enock Bagenda’s brace.

Therefore, Royal Giant High School will represent CECAFA region at the final tournament slated for April this year in Morocco.

On top of the winning the title, they also receive a cash prize of $100,000.

In the Girls’ category, Uganda representatives Amus College settled for third place, bagging bronze and a cash prize of $50,000.

The closely contested game saw Amus College win 1-0 against Kiramuzi MS from Rwanda thanks to Shakira Logose’s goal.

The Bukedea based school had lost 2-0 in the semifinals to Ethiopia’s Awaro SS.

Awaro SS eventually lost 3-0 to Tanzania’s Fountain Gate in the final.
