CAF Confederations cup: Memorable exit for Victoria

SCVU 1-0 Don Bosco (Democratic Republic of Congo)

CS Don Bosco qualify 3 – 1 on aggregate

Sports Club Victoria University head coach Morley Byekwaso headed into today’s preliminary round return leg of the CAF Confederations cup with the aim of overturning the first leg 3-0 deficit suffered at the hands of CS Don Bosco. It was a huge mountain for the continental debutants in club football but Byekwaso is happy that his boys have picked something from the two games.

Savio Kabugo and Denis Iguma were welcomed back to the starting lineup after their suspension by the club as Martin Mpuga retained the captain’s arm band.

‘Our debut has not gone the way we wanted but we got the opportunity to learn a lot of things. We now need to concentrate on the domestic competitions’ said Byekwaso after today’s game which SCVU won 1-0 at Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

Mathew Odong struck in the 79th minute to give the home side the lead and the score remained unchanged till end of the game as Don Bosco advanced 3-1 on aggregate.

The Uganda cup holders were not able to call on the services of some of their star players due to different reasons. With Mike Sserumaga out through suspension, coach Byekwaso had to contend with life as Noah Ssemakula was down with re severe malaria, Yasser Mugerwa was struggling with ankle problem while keeper Benjamin Ochan picked up the harm string injury in the first leg.

SCVU line up: Ali Kimera , Martin Mpuga (Capt), Isaac Muleme, Savio Kabugo, Fred Agandu, David Ndihabwe (Daniel Isiagi), Muwadda Mawejje (Brian Ochwo), Matthew Odong, Dennis Iguma, Mutyaba Muzamiru and Simon Okwi (Peter Otai).
