CAF Glo Awards 2016: Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Onyango makes final short list

African Player of the Year – Based in Africa

  • Denis Onyango (Uganda & Mamelodi Sundowns)
  • Khama Billiat (Zimbabwe & Mamelodi Sundowns)
  • Rainford Kalaba (Zambia & TP Mazembe)

African Player of the Year 

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon & Borussia Dortmund)
  • Riyad Mahrez (Algeria & Leicester City)
  • Sadio Mané (Senegal & Liverpool)

Uganda Cranes and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango made the final top three for the 2016 African player of the year (based in Africa) award.

The awards gala night will take place in Abuja, Nigeria on the 5th January 2017 where Onyango is in contention with Sundowns teammate and Zimbabwe forward Khama Billiat as well as TP Mazembe and Zambian midfielder Rainford Kalaba.

Onyango guided the Uganda Cranes to the AFCON finals in Gabon for the first time in over 38 years and won the domestic league and Africa Champions league title with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The trio made the cut following votes from Head Coaches or Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF, Media Committee, Technical & Football committee and a panel of Media Experts.

Meanwhile, Gabonese midfielder Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Algeria Winger Riyad Mahrez and Senegalese Winger Sadio Mané have made the final three for the main African Player of the Year accolade.

The winners will be unveiled at the CAF Awards Gala on Thursday, 5 January 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria.
