The Uganda U-17 Girls’ football team stepped up their preparations for the CECAFA U-17 championship with a 3-2 win over a tough Kampala select team in a practice match played at FUFA Technical Centre Njeru on Thursday evening.
Fauziah Najjemba opened the scoring for the National team before Sharon Nadunga equalised for the visitors as first half ended 1-1.
Nadunga thought she had won it for her side, when she again put them into the lead with an angled shot that gave goalkeeper Daphine Nyayenga no chance but Tooro Queens midfielder Summaya Komuntale equalised off a spade work by Kawempe Muslem SS winger Margaret Kunihira, before another of her club mates Hadija Nandago struck the winner from the penalty spot.
The Ayub Khalifa coached side-Uganda girls had to endure the strength of Moses Nkata’s select side that boasted of strong names like goalkeeper Juliet Adeke, Naziz Florence, Brenda Nakayenga, Sharon Nadunga, Spencer Nakacwa, Anita Namata, among others before finally coming out victorious.
It was a good select team that gave us a tough challenge. I am happy that our players followed the instructions and I am encouraged that from this build up, we are only left with a few things to work on ahead of the tournament’ Uganda team coach Ayub Khalifa said after the game.
‘We have played a quality side that I believe is ready to represent the country. I trust that the players are looking forward to representing the country’ noted Nkata who handled the Kampala Select Side.
