Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan Mckinstry has confirmed defender Halid Lwaliwa will captain the team ahead of the Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) in Cameroon.
The gaffer indicates his decision is based on the abilities and recent success of the player.
It should be noted that Lwaliwa is the captain of Uganda Premier League Champions Vipers SC and was also the skipper as Uganda won the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in 2019.
‘As our Captain, he had served so well over the last year, including breaking into the Senior Cranes team.’ Said the coach.
‘He will be supported by a group of four or five senior players who will be asked to take on the mantle of working alongside Halid to provide a good atmosphere.‘
Asked about the benefits of playing in the Pre-CHAN Mini tournament, Mckinstry indicates it was a good chance to assess the players and making a perfect decision when naming the final squad.
‘This camp has been of great value to us but also a great challenge to us the coaching team in picking the final squad. If I’m honest we spent over three hours selecting the final team. We wanted to make sure that every player got a fair chance, not only in terms of playing and training time in this Mini tournament but also discussing the pros and cons of every player.’
‘When selecting the final team, we wanted balance in the squad. We needed plan B depending on the opposition but also considered the performance of each individual.’
Uganda is in group C alongside defending Champions Morocco, Rwanda and Togo.
