Sports Regulations 2014: High Court issues interim order

An interim order has been issued by the High Court restraining the National Council of sports and Attorney General from implementing the 2014 Sports regulations released about six months ago by the Minister of Education and Sports Hon Jessica  .

The order was issued by Her Lordship Lady Justice Elizabeth Ibanda Nahamya.

Legal Brains Trust applied to Court challenging the 2014 Sports regulations because they infringed on the sports Associations’ rights to associate as enshrined in the constitution of Uganda limiting their legal form of spots association.

The effect of the order means that the application of the 2014 Sports regulations is suspended until the hearing of the main application on 17th October, 2014 (Cause No. 54 of 2014) to the High Court and its disposal.

The interim order was issued on 3rd October, 2014 with just two days left to the deadline set for registration to all sports federations in Uganda by the Ministry of Education and sports to conform to the National council of sports regulations, statutory instrument No 38 of 2014.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA had already submitted their documents to the National Council of Sports regarding the registration a month ago.

The applicant was represented in court by Counsel Isaac Ssemakadde.

Legal Brains Trust is a Civil Society group dealing in human rights issues.
