Stanbic Uganda Cup joint record holders Express Football Club will face BUL FC in the quarterfinals. This comes after the draw was held on Wednesday at FUFA House in Mengo, Kampala
Express FC just like KCCA FC has won the prestigious knockout tournament ten times with their last triumph coming in 2007. The Red Eagles will face a tricky side in BUL FC who have always been tough opponents in as far as the previous league engagements are concerned.
In the last ten league games between the two sides, Express FC have only won twice with the Jinja-based outfit winning six while the other two games ended in stalemates.
To reach this stage, Express FC dumped out Police FC on kicks from the penalty mark (3-1 after normal time ended goalless) while BUL FC, on the other hand, outwitted Bukedea Town Council FC 4-1.
Last season’s runners up Vipers SC will visit Proline FC at the StarTimes stadium Lugogo, the first time the Venoms will play away this season inthe competition after dumping Rushere Growers(walkover), Kansai Plascon and Kiboga Young FC all at home.
There will be renewal acquaintances after Kyetume FC were drawn at home against Wakiso Giants. The two teams are both in Elgon group of the StarTimes FUFA Big League and will be facing off for the second time this season. The league meeting ended in a one-all draw at Nakisunga playground.
Kyetume FC ousted Kitara FC in the round of 16 while the Purple Sharks eliminated Tooro United.
Nebbi Central FC another big league entity who dumped out Nkambi Coffee FC will host Bright Stars FC.
Former Uganda Cranes legend Ashe Mukasa and Ronald Muganzi, Head of Agent Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda conducted the quarterfinal draws.
Mukasa famously known as the ‘football god’ with his left sweet foot is best known for his career at Express FC and the only Ugandan named on the best team during the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.
He reminisced how the competition was tight at the time that he did not get the chance to lift the Uganda Cup-then the Kakungulu Cup.
“At the time when I played, we had very many good teams like KCC (now KCCA FC), Simba FC, Nsambya Fc, Maroons FC, and Coffee FC. So it was very hard for any team to win a trophy and I must say not winning this tournament still hurts me.” Said Mukasa who played for Nateete FC, Nakivubo Boys, Express FC among others.
Muganzi on the other expressed delight about the progress of the tournament and indicated Stanbic Bank will continue to offer their support.
“As Stanbic Bank, we are happy to associate with FUFA through the Uganda Cup a tournament that brings thrilling action throughout the country. We can only promise more commitment and support towards the tournament.”
Like it has been the case in the previous editions where FUFA attaches Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to the tournament, the same will be done this year with the campaign officially launched today by FUFA Events Manager, Leila Nankya who called upon the public to embrace the cause.
“As we have done in the previous editions, the 2019 Stanbic Uganda Cup will have a CSR activity where we collect clothes and give them to the less privileged at the end of the tournament. I therefore, call upon the public to show support to the cause by bringing the items here at FUFA House and Stanbic Bank branches around the country”
Buganda region will host this year’s final. The date and venue where the final shall be played will be communicated.
