Holders KCCA FC booked a berth into the quarterfinals of this year’s Stanbic Uganda Cup edging past Soana FC in the round of 16 game played at Kavumba Recreation Centre on Wednesday.
KCCA FC needed penalties to see off a resilient Soana FC after normal time had ended 2-2.
Steven Ategeka struck a brace with his first goal coming in 12th minute then the other being a late equalizer in the 88th minute.
Patrick Kaddu and substitute Paul Mucureezi scored for KCCA FC in normal time before eventually winning the game 4-2 on kicks from the penalty.
Proline FC also needed penalties to edge out UPDF FC. The Lugogo based side won the shootout 4-2 after normal time ended goalless.
Mujib Kasule was delighted with the team performance and believes the confidence gained from progressing to the next stage will help improve the team’s performance in the next games.
“ The players’ attitude was good and fought up to the final whistle. Going into the quarterfinals gives us courage and belief going into the next games.” said Kasule
At Villa Park, KJT FC continued their Cinderalla story in the competition by eliminating azam Uganda Premier League side BUL FC.
Allan Serunga was the hero of the day striking a brace for the team that plays in the 4th division (Kampala District Football League).
Jean Pierre Muhindo pulled one back for BUL FC but was not enough to take them to the next stage.
KJT coach Ronald Ssali lauded the players for the commitment and dedicated victory to his dad who was laid to rest earlier today.
Fufa Big League side Synergy FC earned a hard-fought 2-1 away win against Busula FC with Mbido Kalaga scoring both goals. Ezra Kaye got the consolation for the Buganda regional league side.
Paul Kayongo the coach of Busula despite failing to progress picked postives from the game.
“ I thank my players because we put up a better performance than them (Synergy FC) despite failing to advance.” He said after the game.
Action continues on Thursday with four games on card. Ndejje University host SC Villa at Wankulukuku, Mbarara City FC will be at home to Kansai Plascon while Kira United will host Vipers SC at St.Mary’s stadium in Kitende. Seeta United travel to Hoima to face Kitara FC.
The teams that advance to the quarterfinals are now assured of 5 million shillings with the overall winner getting 30 million shillings.
The final for the 44th edition is expected to take place in Kumi District in June.
