Uganda Hippos secure silver at 13th African Games in Ghana

Uganda U20 Men’s National Football Team, the Uganda Hippos bagged silver at the 13th edition of the African Games.

In the final game for the Men’s Football Tournament played on Friday at Accra Sports Stadium, the Hippos settled for siver.

Hosts Ghana took gold after edging Uganda in the final 1-0 courtesy of a stoppage time winner by Jerry Afriyie.

The game saw either side get scoring opoortunities but it was Afriyie’s strike from distance in the 90th minute that settled the contest.

Coach Morely Byekwaso was proud of his team and believes the players have a bright future.

“I am proud of the commitment the players showed throughout the tournament. Besides not winning gold, we had outstanding performances and everyone noticed it. I believe the boys have a bright future and should only continue to work hard.” He said in the post match press conference.

This is Uganda’s best performance at the African Games. Previously, the team’s highest reach was the semifinal at the 1999 All Africa Games in South Africa.

It should be noted that the Women’s U20 Team (The Queen Cranes) also won bronze after edging Senegal in the third place playoff.
