CAF Champions League, First round return leg
KCCA 1Nkana Red Devils 2
Nkana advances 4-3 on aggregate
Ugandan league champions KCC FC went into today’s match with Zambian side Nkana Red Devils with history against them. Indeed, history books were written again as Nkana ejected KCC Fc from the competition winning 2-1 at Mandela National Stadium to progress 4-3 on aggregate. Prior to the match, no Ugandan club has ever beaten Nkana at home in the previous three attempts.
KCCA FC went into the game still buoyed by the incredible 2-2 first left leg draw in Kitwe a week ago. It was a different story though as KCC FC could not contain their visitors especially in second round of the game at Namboole.
Tonny Odur who had scored in KCC’s previosu three fixtures in the competition and Michael Mirungi, missed clear cut chances early in the game. Birungi dribbled all the way from the centre line but failed to beat advancing goalkeeper Charles Mweemba for what could have been the game’s opener.
KCCA paid for that lapse with Nkana’s first goal of the match courtesy of Claude Bwalya 29minutes from kick off.
Team captain Fahad Kawooya had dropped the ball for Bwalya to run away with the ball.
KCCA equalized four minutes after restart when Brian Majwega curved in a free-kick past Mweemba after Odur was brought down at the edge of the box.
Christopher Munthali then tapped in KCCA goalkeeper Salim Jamal’s rebound to give the visitors another lead in the 58thminute of play.
“After the first leg in Kitwe we knew exactly what to do and we have got it. The fact that we are facing Zamalek will even be a better challenge for us,” Nkan’s coach Masautso Mwale said after the victory.
Nkana play Zamalek of Egypt in the second of the Champions League.
