Jinja Secondary School won their first ever Copa national schools football title on Saturday after overcoming 8 time winners, St Mary’s Kitende in a closely contested final played at the Masaka Recreational stadium on Saturday before a capacity crowd.
Joel Madondo scored the opener for Jinja S.S before Kennedy Kasozi found the equalizer two minutes from full time and force the game into post match penalties.
Jinja S.S won 4-3 in the shoot out as they earned their first ever national schools football title.
The tournament record winners Kibuli S.S overcame Nakaseke International 1-0 to take third place and be guaranteed of a slot at this year’s East Africa Secondary school games that will be hosted in Gulu district by St Joseph College, Layibi.
State Minister of sports Hon. Charles Bakabulindi was chief guest as he handled over the trophy and medals to the best three schools and excelling individuals.
Federation of Uganda Football Associations was ably represented at the tournament by the FUFA Youth Development Officer, Bashir Mutyaba as well as coach Mathias Lule who pitched camp in Masaka for two weeks to help identify excelling exceptional talents who will be followed up to be incorporated in the national under age teams.
St Julian’s Abdallah Ssenyonga finished with 16 goals to take the top scorers’ boot. Ivan Wani of Jinja S.S was the most valuable player (MVP).
A total of 60 schools took part at the nationals having successfully qualified from the respective regions across the country.
